Jenn De La Vega was born in San Francisco, CA and spent her formative years in Palmdale, CA. After years of marching band and dental work, she matriculated to the University of California, Davis in 2002. With a fickle and curious mind, she became an English and Biology major, librarian at the Experimental College, commission chair with the Associated Students of UCD and radio DJ at KDVS 90.3FM. As an activist, Jenn attended several University of California LGBTQIA conferences and facilitated discussions and workshops surrounding queer media, leadership, safety, activism and sexual assault. KDVS stole Jenn’s heart as she hosted the children’s story time and indie-twee-electronic-folk-pop radio show, “The Mushpot.” She soon became the Office Coordinator and later the Co-Music Director. As an contributing member of the Davis/Sacramento music community she started Mushpot Records, helped formulate KDVS Recordings, wrote articles for the quarterly zine KDViations, took part in the KDVS bi-annual festival Operation Restore Maximum Freedom and gave talks at the Low Power Radio Round-up. Several trips to CMJ’s Music Marathon with KDVS staff introduced Jenn to New York’s fast-paced streets. In July 2006, she moved to Brooklyn, NY with other KDVS ex-directors who call themselves the “KDVS Exiles.” One month and many intern jokes later, Jenn gleefully joined the Fanatic radio squad. In her spare time, Jenn enjoys cooking Italian food for friends, reading critical theory and short stories (especially Adorno and Carver), DJing in black dresses, and dancing around like a silly goose at concerts. She has a weakness for anyone that can operate turntables and/or drum machines. Jenn adores Explosions in the Sky, Rilo Kiley, Mike Relm, DJ Shadow, Yip Yip, Bonfire Madigan, Bobby Birdman, Aqueduct and This Bank Holiday. You can find her in Green Point climbing telephone poles or playing her Casio in the middle of the street. << back to staff list | |
